History of the Trade Square
This square is one of the most iconic places in the city, steeped in rich history and culture. Allow me to share with you the fascinating story of this location.
Commerce Square, also known as Terreiro do Paço in Portuguese, is situated on the bank of the Tagus River and has been an important commercial and political center for centuries. Its construction dates back to the 18th century when it was designed and planned after the devastating 1755 earthquake that ravaged much of Lisbon.
In the past, this square served as the starting point for many maritime expeditions by Portuguese navigators who explored the world in search of new trade routes. It was here that goods from overseas were loaded and unloaded, making it the heart of the country’s maritime and colonial trade.
However, the history of the square is not solely marked by commercial activity. It has also witnessed significant political and social events. One of the most tragic moments occurred in 1908 when King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated in an attack that took place right here, at the main entrance of the Royal Palace.
